Career Counseling - Importance and Key Benefits for Students

“If you have a dream, don’t just sit there. Gather courage to believe that you can succeed and leave no stone unturned to make it a reality.”

School to College Transition

We all have dreams and especially when you are 18 something year old fresh out of high school and with great hopes for the future.
But what will be a right direction for me ? What are my options for career which will lead me to my goals ? I have questions and doubts, do I need to seek help ? Which College ? Which Branch and what do I study ? How do I preserve these dreams of mine and start working towards them ?
Usually, the time after 12th grade is the most stressful for students. Its a transition from school to college. These times involve choosing a career path, and most students are not very sure of what they want to become in life. It is a critical phase and this decision is not easy. The student doesn’t have enough knowledge of what career options there are in different fields. Thus, he ends up deciding a stream based on what his friends/family decide to choose. That is often not a very good approach when it comes to choosing a career.
And that’s where Career Counseling can be helpful. Here are some reasons why career counseling is important for students:

Helps them discover their ExtraAEdge

We all are gifted and good at something. We all have from childhood our own interests which evolve and we become good at. Its your ExtraAEdge. Its a matter of self-realisation which a counselor can help the students and parents connect the dots of these competencies. e.g. Some kids are good with numbers, some good in communication, some good with aesthetics and arts, some good at drawing & sketching, some good at biology etc..
A career choice coupled with a students inherent passions and competencies is an excellent recipe for success which a counselor can facilitate.

Instill confidence and potential

Career counselors have scientifically designed analysis / questions that can help students discover potential and have confidence in their abilities. Most students do not know what they are good at, because most of them have not tried different things in life. With an aptitude test, they are able to better figure out what they are good at and what they are not. Thus, they are able to choose a career where they are more likely to find success.

Get right Guidance

Often, students are not aware of the pros and cons of different streams and careers. Most times, they get their information from friends or family. With career counseling, they are able to get guidance on different fields and careers. Professional counselors are aware of advantages, disadvantages and opportunities in several fields, which helps students make a more informed choice.

Career change may not be required

Many times, when we end up choosing the wrong career, we have to make a career jump at some point in our life. Although there is nothing wrong with that, career change can often be very stressful. It can also be embarrassing, since it is not a socially accepted norm, at least in India. When you get propercounseling in schools, you are able to make a better career choice. Thus, it cuts down on the risk of career change at a later stage in life.

Benefit to the Global Workforce

A country always needs skilled professionals in every field. When people choose a field they are best in, it always bodes well for a nation. The goal of career counseling is to help students choose a field that is in tune with their skills and their expectations. Thus, with the help of career counseling for students, most candidates end up choosing the right career, which ultimately helps the nation succeed.
So if you feel you need to seek advice and have queries on career feel free to reach out to a trained and experienced counselor. Your career is important and make a informed choice.
